Are Chemical Peels Right for You?

You may want to consider a chemical peel with Dr. Firouz if you’re looking for a non-surgical way to improve:

  • Fine lines and facial wrinkles
  • Sun spots, age spots, and other skin color irregularities
  • A rough skin texture or dull complexion
  • Mild scarring

Types of Chemical Peels

  • Light Peel. These peels use very mild acids, such as alpha-hydroxy acids and beta hydroxy acids to correct pigmentation issues, acne, and fine wrinkling. They only penetrate the outer layer of skin and the recovery tends to be about a week long. As such, Dr. Firouz tends to recommend them for men with early signs of aging.
  • Medium Chemical Peel. For slightly more significant scars, wrinkles, and uneven skin color, Dr. Firouz may recommend a medium chemical peel. These are usually composed of TCA (trichloroacetic acid) and glycolic acid. After the peel, you will likely feel as though you have a deep sunburn for about one week.
  • Deep Chemical Peel. This is the strongest chemical peel available. It is the only option that is appropriate for deep facial wrinkles and scars. It uses phenol to reach the deepest layers of your skin, and it requires a lengthy recovery period of about two weeks.

Your Chemical Peel Experience

When you arrive at our Beverly Hills office for your chemical peel, we will begin by thoroughly cleaning your face. If you are having a deep chemical peel, you will receive general anesthesia. For all other peels, we will apply a local anesthetic.

During the procedure, Dr. Firouz will apply the chemical peel solution to your face. During this stage, you will feel a combination of warm, stinging sensations as the solution penetrates your skin. Once the peel is complete, Dr. Firouz will wash off the chemical solution and your recovery will begin.

After Your Chemical Peel

The type of chemical peel you have will determine your recovery period. For example, a deep chemical peel is associated with a healing time of about 14 to 21 days, while a light chemical peel will result in a sunburn-like reaction that lasts about one week.

Male Chemical PeelFAQs

Am I a candidate for a chemical peel?

Chemical peels can generally be applied to many skin types. However, they may not be recommended if you have a history of abnormal scarring or are at higher risk for pigmentation changes.

Is there anything a chemical peel cannot accomplish?

Chemical peels are not ideal for deeper wrinkles or significant scarring. In those cases, other treatments such as laser resurfacing or injectables may be more appropriate.

How should I prepare my skin before a chemical peel?

You may be advised to avoid certain skincare products, such as retinoids or exfoliants, in the days leading up to your treatment. Proper preparation helps reduce irritation and supports better results.

How often can I get a chemical peel?

Treatment frequency depends on the type of peel and your skin’s needs. Lighter peels may be repeated more often, while deeper peels require more time between sessions.

Will a chemical peel help with acne breakouts?

Yes, certain chemical peels can help reduce acne by clearing pores and improving skin turnover. The specific type of peel will depend on your skin condition.

Are chemical peels safe for darker skin tones?

They can be safe when performed carefully, but certain formulations are preferred to reduce the risk of pigmentation changes. A personalized approach is important.

Can I combine a chemical peel with other treatments?

Yes, chemical peels are often incorporated into a broader skincare plan that may include other non-surgical treatments for enhanced results.

What should I avoid after a chemical peel?

It is important to avoid sun exposure, harsh skincare products, and picking at the skin while it heals. Following aftercare instructions supports proper recovery and results.
