Understanding Earlobe Damage

Earlobe damage can occur for several reasons, including:

  • Wearing Heavy Earrings. Routinely wearing heavy earrings places excessive pressure on your earlobes, causing them to stretch and possibly tear.
  • Using Gauges. Gauge earrings stretch the earlobe gradually. Using them can result in thin earlobe tissue and large openings that require surgical correction.
  • Experiencing Trauma. If you experienced trauma to the earlobe, for example, if an earring was ripped out, the damage may require surgery.

The Earlobe Repair Procedure

Dr. Firouz will perform your earlobe repair under local anesthesia in the comfort of our Beverly Hills office. The exact approach taken will depend on the damage he is addressing.

To repair torn earlobes, Dr. Firouz will suture fresh tissue together in a way that minimizes the resulting scar. If your piercing holes are stretched out, Dr. Firouz will remove the skin around the hole and stitch it close.

Your Recovery

Your earlobe repair recovery should be straightforward. You will return to our Beverly Hills office in seven days to have the sutures removed. Until then, you should not submerge your head in water, sleep on your ears, or apply pressure to the repaired area.

How to Prevent Another Torn Earlobe

Once your earlobe has been repaired, you will want to take extra care to avoid future damage. To that end, it is important to:

  • Wear Earrings with Care. After earlobe repair, you are advised to avoid heavy earrings and gauges moving forward. Instead, choose light earrings that fit comfortably. Also, consider taking regular breaks from wearing earrings so that your earlobes can rest.
  • Avoid High-Risk Activities. If your earlobe is accidentally pulled, tugged, or torn, it may be damaged again. It is a good idea to avoid any activities that could lead to a re-injury.

Earlobe RepairFAQs

Am I a candidate for earlobe repair?

If your earlobes are damaged or stretched for any reason, for example due to an accident, injury, or wearing heavy earrings, you are likely a candidate for earlobe repair.

When can I get my ears pierced again?

After the repair, your earlobes will need several weeks to heal. Once healing is complete, typically around six to eight weeks, you can safely have them re-pierced.

Will there be a visible scar after earlobe repair?

A small scar is expected, but it is usually minimal and placed in a way that blends naturally with the contour of the earlobe as it heals.

How long does the procedure take?

Earlobe repair is a relatively quick procedure and is often completed in under an hour, depending on the extent of the damage being addressed.

Is earlobe repair painful?

The procedure is performed with local anesthesia, so discomfort during treatment is minimal. Mild soreness afterward is common and typically resolves quickly.

Can both earlobes be repaired at the same time?

Yes, both earlobes can be treated during the same appointment if needed, allowing for a more convenient and balanced result.

Can stretched earlobes from gauges be fully restored?

In many cases, stretched earlobes can be significantly improved. The final result depends on how much the tissue has been thinned or expanded over time.

Will my earlobes look natural after they heal?

The goal of repair is to restore a smooth, natural shape. With careful technique, the earlobe typically heals with a balanced and proportionate appearance.
