Body Lift Surgery or Belt Lipectomy Procedure Reshapes Sagging Skin

It is natural for the skin to lose some of its natural elasticity as part of the aging process. As a result, the midsection may lose some of its firmness and contour. A surgical procedure called a belt lipectomy or body lift can help raise, reshape, and recontour a sagging midsection. A body lift eliminates excess skin and fat deposits to create a younger body shape. A belt lipectomy can be used to add definition to the waist, abdomen, thighs, hips, and buttocks. Many patients choose to undergo a liposuction at the same time as a body lift.

Who Is a Candidate for a Body Lift?

Beverly Hills body lift plastic surgeon Dr. Firouz has extensive experience in performing body lift surgery for his patients. He typically recommends the procedure to his patients who have exercise-resistant fat deposits and sagging skin caused by age, extreme weight loss, or multiple pregnancies.

What to Expect During a Body Lift

Depending on the extensiveness of the surgery, the procedure can take anywhere from three to seven hours and is performed using general anesthesia. The exact technique used varies based on the patient's current body shape and the desired results. In most cases, the procedure involves making an incision that runs from the thigh to the waist. For more extreme body lifts, the incision may extend all the way around the lower back and waist. If the thighs and buttocks are to be lifted, an incision may be made along the buttocks' crease. Once the incision is made, the doctor removes the unwanted fat and excess skin. The remaining skin is then pulled tight and stitched into place.

What Recovery Looks like After Surgery

To minimize the risk of potential problems and complications, patients should follow their surgeon's post-surgical instructions carefully. Getting rest and avoiding excess movement is essential for proper healing and recovery. The bandages that are applied following surgery provide support and help keep swelling to a minimum. Most patients will have tubes in place to allow any excess fluids to drain properly. Any time an incision is made in the skin there will be a scar; however, body lift incisions are carefully positioned to make them as discreet as possible. Some physical discomfort is to be expected with any surgery; however, oral pain relievers are typically effective at keeping the discomfort to a minimum. The length of the recovery depends on the extensiveness of the procedure, so the doctor will determine when it is acceptable to return to work and other activities.
