During Eyelid Blepharoplasty

A blepharoplasty, commonly referred to as an eyelid lift, is meant to create a more defined eyelid and can make a person’s overall appearance seem more rested and alert. The following outlines what to expect when undergoing this popular cosmetic procedure.

Before the Procedure

Before starting the procedure, the plastic cosmetic surgeon Dr. Jimmy Firouz administers medications to ensure that the patient remains comfortable throughout the surgery. An eyelid lift can be performed using general anesthesia or intravenous sedation.

During the Procedure

Any surgery, no matter how minor, leaves some type of scar. An experienced blepharoplasty facial surgeon will know how to strategically position the incisions so that they will be hidden within the eyelid’s natural creases and structure.

To lift the upper eyelid, the incision is made within the natural crease. This allows the surgeon to tighten the muscles that support the eyelid, remove excess skin, and reposition or remove fat deposits.
To correct the lower eyelid, incisions can be made under the lash line or on the inside of the eyelid. As with an upper eyelid blepharoplasty, excess skin and fat can be removed or repositioned.

The incisions may be closed using a variety of techniques, including surgical tape, adhesives, or removable sutures. In some cases, the doctor may also recommend a chemical peel or laser treatment to minimize any discoloration around the lower eyelid.

The Results

It is normal for there to be slight bruising and swelling around the surgical site that should subside within a few days to expose a smoother, more defined eyelid for a more youthful and rested appearance.
